Course Overview
Google, and other free search engines, can be powerful research tools. While, the library provides access to costly published materials, like books and articles, that cannot often be found freely available on the web; search engines provide access to freely available government data, news outlets, private foundation information, and educational institutions. This class provides an introduction to research techniques in a college library using search engines to find materials on the open web. Focus on use of the open web for research purposes, including web search strategies, appropriate search engines and directories, evaluation techniques for web resources, recognition of plagiarism, and bibliographic citation of web resources.
