Learn CSE (Council of Science Editors) style to document sources in the end references and in-text citations.

Journal Article with Multiple Authors*

  • In the examples, notice and follow the capitalization, punctuation, and spacing between elements.
  • The sample article was retrieved from a library database (or online source). If your article is from a print journal, omit the access date and URL.

Elements of an End Reference Citation 

  1. Authors. Multiple authors are separated by commas and end with a period.
  2. Date. 
  3. Article title. Notice capitalization.
  4. Journal Title. Notice capitalization.
  5. [Date accessed]; Notice wording and date format.
  6. Volume number(issue number):page numbers. Notice there are NO spaces.  
  7. URL.

Examples of an In-Text Citation

In-text citations should be placed next to the source which is being referenced. These are just two of several options for varying your writing:

  • At the end of the sentence that contains information from the source, list the author(s) and the year (Higgins et al. 2022).
  • However, if you mention Higgins et al. in the sentence, you don't need to list authors again in the in-text citation (2022).

Chapter within a Book/Ebook (Each chapter is written by different authors)

  • Suggested for sources like Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia or Birds of the World when only one chapter or section is used, and each chapter is written by different authors.*
  • Notice and follow the capitalization, punctuation, and spacing between elements.
  • The sample article was retrieved from a library database (or online source). If your chapter is from a print book, omit the access date and URL.

Elements of an End Reference Citation 

  1. Authors. Multiple authors are separated by commas and end with a period.
  2. Date. 
  3. Chapter title. Notice capitalization.
  4. In: Editors' Names, editors. Include the words "In" and ", editor(s)."
  5. Book Title. Notice capitalization.
  6. Publication info such as edition # if available, City (State) of Publisher: Publisher.
  7. Volume number.  Use the abbreviation Vol. if it is a multivolume work. 
  8. [Date accessed]; Notice wording and date format.
  9. Page numbers. 
  10. URL.

Example of an In-Text Citation

In-text citations should be placed next to the source which is being referenced. These are just two of several options for varying your writing:

  • At the end of the sentence that contains information from the source list the author(s) and the year  (Halliday 2004).
  • In this sentence Halliday (2004) the author has already been referenced so the date can be placed directly after the name.

  • Use these examples when citing a book or chapter of a book written by the same author(s).*
  • Notice and follow the capitalization, punctuation, and spacing between elements.
  • An ebook was used for the examples. If you consulted a print book, omit the access date and URL.

  1. Authors. Multiple authors are separated by commas and end with a period.

  3. Book Title. Notice capitalization.
  4. Publication info such as edition # if available, City (State) of Publisher: Publisher; 
  5. Volume number. Use the abbreviation Vol. if it is a multivolume work.
  6. [Date accessed]; Notice wording and date format.
  7. If citing just one part of the book, Chapter number, Chapter name; Page numbers preceded by "p. ". Notice capitalization.
  8. URL.

Example of an In-Text Citation

In-text citations should be placed next to the source which is being referenced. These are just two of several options for varying your writing:

  • At the end of the sentence that contains information from the source, list the author(s) and the year (Weis and Butler 2009).
  • An in-text citation can be put in the middle of a sentence immediately after the information (Weis and Butler 2009) as this one shows.

Websites

  • References to websites and other online formats follow the same general principles as for printed references, with the addition of a date of update/revision (if available) along with an access date and a URL.
  • Often key elements of a citation are missing from websites. Include whatever information you are able to find so that your readers can verify your source.

Elements of an End Reference Citation 

  1. Authors, if available. Multiple authors are separated by commas and end with a period.
  2. Title of homepage. Notice capitalization.
  3. Date of publication.*
  4. Place of publication includes city and state abbreviation: Publisher;
  5. [date updated; date accessed]. Notice wording and date format.
  6. URL.

*If no date of publication can be determined, either use a copyright date (if available), preceded by “c” OR use "[date unknown]."

  • For the in-text reference, include only the first word or two of the title (enough to distinguish it from other titles in the reference list), followed by an ellipsis.
    • Example: (Migratory monach...2022)
  • If no date is available, use [date unknown].
    • Example: (A sample website...[date unknown])

Online Videos and Other Media

Elements of an End Reference Citation 

  1. Title of the video or media. Notice capitalization and no period before the medium designation.
  2. [medium type such as video or image].
  3. Date posted/copyrighted, length of video.
  4. Title of program or series, if applicable.
  5. Producer.
  6. [accessed YYYY Mon DD].
  7. URL.

*If no date of publication can be determined, either use a copyright date (if available), preceded by “c” OR use "[date unknown]."
