ENG 1A - Education Issues: Periodical Articles

Online Databases

The LPC Library subscribes to several online databases that contain articles published in magazines and newspapers.

Start with these three multiple subject databases:

For access to magazines, journals, and special reports specific to education:

  • ERIC The Education Resource Information Center, provides access to education literature and resources. The database provides access to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index. The database contains more than 1.3 million records and links to more than 323,000 full-text documents dating back to 1966.

Additional databases to use depending on the focus of your topic :

Search Terms and Tips

Sample search terms:

  • Farmer's market
  • Farmer's market and local foods
  • Obesity
  • Obesity and children
  • Obesity and children and fast food

Tips:

Use only the key words from your research question.  Do not type in a whole phrase.

  • Example: DON'T = Organic food is more nutritious and healthy
  • Example:  DO = Organic food and nutrition

Add more key words if you get too many results.

  • Example: Organic food
  • Example: Organic food and fruits
  • Example: Organic food and fruits and pesticides

Try different related words or synonyms.

  • Example: farms; farming; agriculture; agricultural

Try truncating your key words.  Most databases have advanced features such truncation to allow for searching variant spellings or word endings.

  • Example: neighbor#
  • By adding the # in an Academic Search Complete search you will get results for neighbor, neighbors, neighboring, neighborhood, etc.
