Citation Help

Overview

In-text citations are brief, unobtrusive references that direct readers to the works-cited-list entries for the sources you consulted and, where relevant, to the location in the source being cited (MLA Handbook 227). This page covers some basic examples of MLA in-text citations.  For more complete information, see the resources listed in the box to the right.

 

Elements, Format, and Examples

Elements Needed (in the order given) - 

  • First thing listed for the reference in the Works Cited list (ex. Author Last Name, Organization Name, or Work Title,
  • Specific location in work (ex. page number, time stamp).
